Keep On-Hold Messages Fresh with New Content

Keep on-hold message fresh with new content

The bishop on the chess board is known in some languages as the "messenger." At On Hold Company, we know delivering fresh on-hold messages is key to marketing success.

This is part of a series on crafting a winning on-hold marketing strategy.

At On Hold Company, we have reason to be particularly fond of the Bishop on the chess board. Throughout history, the piece has had lots of names, but many of them translate into “messenger.” And we love a good messenger around here.

Our culture is in a constant state of flux where the prevailing mindset is “old is bad” and “new is good.” Consequently, companies that stay on the cutting-edge are constantly repackaging themselves. Those that donʼt fall behind. In fact, no successful business launches a once-for-all-of-time image or marketing campaign.

You see it in television advertising all the time. The travel website Priceline.com recently killed off William Shatnerʼs “Priceline Negotiator” character, opening the door to go an entirely new direction with its ads.

Allstate had a great thing going with spokesman Dennis Haysbert and the “Our Stand” campaign. Then along came Mayhem, and now the company has two great ad platforms to stand on.

The same principle holds true for on-hold messaging. Regularly rotating your advertising content is imperative. Your marketing announcements must stay fresh and relevant in order to be effective. In other words, even non-dated on-hold messages have a shelf life. And thereʼs a word for stale on-hold messaging… Stalemate.

There are unlimited opportunities to connect with callers in fresh ways, but you need to think broadly of your message. What are the trends in your industry and how are you positioned to meet those challenges? Are you bringing new products or services to market? Have you won an industry award or a new accreditation? Does your business have seasonal tips or advice to offer callers throughout the year? Are your on-hold messages “scrolling” as effectively — and frequently — as the banners on your website?

Like a Bishop on the battlefield, On Hold Company can design creative content that becomes your “messenger,” getting your message across effectively in a changing business environment. Sometimes, the most profound strategy is found in something simple. Make sure your on hold “messenger” is at the top of its game.

Is Your On Hold Message in Line with Your Brand?

Keep Your On Hold Message in Line with Your Brand

In chess, the Rook derives its power from moving in a straight line. Employing your corporate slogans, mottos and tag lines on hold will keep your marketing message moving in a straight line.

This is part of a series on crafting a winning on-hold marketing strategy.

In the game of chess, the Rook can be a misunderstood piece. Perhaps thatʼs because of the way the piece looks. Despite its appearance, the Rook is not derived from a tower or a castle. In the history of chess, the Rookʼs power is developed from the strength of the chariot — fast and powerful. And like a chariot in battle, it can move swiftly across great distances as long as it moves in one direction.

The same is true for your brand. There are tried and true elements of your corporate identity that you can deploy quickly that resonate with customers. We often refer to those elements as core branding identifiers, because they rarely change and they carry your identity a long way in corporate battle. In addition to your business name, your corporate identity is inherently contained within your slogans, mottos and taglines.

Here are just a few examples of this phenomenon:

  • “It pays to discover.”
  • “The World on Time.”
  • “Have it your way.”
  • “Are you in good hands?”

Most companies offer a core product or service that is readily available from competitors within their own markets. Maybe directly across the street. Ironically, some businesses promote what they do or sell independently of their corporate identity. And thatʼs like playing chess without either Rook. They are playing without the full power of their brand.

The intentional, systematic use of a corporate slogan or tagline is an effective distinguishing factor, especially in the context of tight competition. On Hold Companyʼs Concept Design team consults with clients to identify creative ways to employ slogans, mottos and tag lines on hold, ensuring you never leave your brand behind.

Your First Move to Winning On Hold: A Consistent Message

This is part of a series on crafting a winning on-hold marketing strategy.

Delivering a consistent message — on hold, online, in print and everywhere else — is key to a successful marketing strategy.

Delivering a consistent message — on hold, online, in print and everywhere else — is key to a successful marketing strategy.

At On Hold Company, we believe a thoroughly strategic on-hold marketing campaign will include a combination of winning elements, similar to all the pieces in a chess set.  The first ‘piece’ that is needed is a commitment to delivering a consistent message at all client touch points.

When consulting with our clients, we encourage them to think deeply about all of their marketing content and mediums.  What image are they projecting via their website?  What points of emphasis are they making online?  How are they using social media like Facebook and Twitter?  What do their customers see and hear in TV, radio and print advertising?

There shouldn’t be a major disconnect between what callers see online (or in print) and hear on hold.  Rather, there should be continuity among all customer touch points.  Yet companies often fail to promote their website and Facebook page effectively and adequately in their on-hold messages.  Your on-hold campaign should be an open portal to both.

Without question, your company is making sizable investments of resources into all of these areas.  Studies show that businesses spend 94 percent of their advertising budget to make the phone ring, but only 4 percent in effectively handling the call when it rings in.

By incorporating a thoughtful on-hold strategy, you can ensure that your company is delivering a consistent message with every call.

On Hold Marketing Takes a Winning Strategy

In on-hold marketing, as in chess, it takes strategy to be successful.

In on-hold marketing, as in chess, it takes strategy to be successful.

A love for the game of chess runs in my family. My father was the president of his high school chess club. He taught me to play chess and think strategically as a teenager. Slowly, I learned what each piece could do and began to play intentionally with the end in view. In time, I won more games than I lost and eventually competed in a statewide match. (I have a medal in my stash of high school memoirs somewhere!) My son plays now, and I enjoy challenging his strategy.

Strategy is essential because winning is never automatic — not in chess and certainly not in the context of a corporate on-hold marketing campaign. But very few companies take the time to formulate a solid on-hold marketing strategy. Instead, most tend to think of on-hold messaging only in terms of a script or an audio production. And that’s like trying to win a game of chess by using only one piece of the whole chess set. It won’t happen.

At On Hold Company, we believe a thoroughly strategic on-hold marketing campaign will include the following ‘pieces’:

  • Delivering a consistent message at all client touchpoints
  • Producing truly creative audio marketing
  • Using slogans, mottos, and taglines
  • Rotating marketing announcements regularly
  • Delivering ads via an advanced technology platform
  • Deploying an “extra Queen” (That’s right… an extra Queen)

We will explore each of these elements of a winning strategy in more detail in upcoming blog posts.

More than ever, strategy is the distinguishing factor between merely have something “on hold” and truly driving growth and maximizing brand awareness.

Take Action on Clean Off Your Desk Day

There really is a holiday for just about everything. This one, however, needs a lot more attention than it’s getting.

Clean Off Your Desk Day is the second Monday in January, and it's the perfect time to get organized to meet your goals for the year.

Clean Off Your Desk Day is the second Monday in January, and it's the perfect time to get organized to meet your goals for the year.

One of the folks here at On Hold Company pointed out that the second Monday in January is annual Clean Off Your Desk Day. I’m sure I got a memo about it at one point. I just can’t seem to find it in this pile …

You see where I am going with this?

We have pushed through the holiday season, and we have our goals for the new year. Clean Off Your Desk Day is the perfect opportunity to put some organizational muscle behind those goals and lay out a clear path to success.

Here are a few tips for celebrating from the website onlineorganizing.com:

Square off the piles on your desk. One stack at a time, decide what action needs to take place with each piece of paper.

Unless you have a good reason to keep it, toss it out. If a document requires an action, contains vital information, you can’t easily get it again somewhere else if you need it, or you are legally required to hang onto it then hang onto it.

Set aside time each day to clear up the accumulated paper. If it requires an action, finish taking action on it and be done with it. If it needs filed, file it. If it belongs to someone else, return it. If it’s trash, toss it. Don’t let paper linger indefinitely.

Do you have contracts and proposals stacked on your desk that you said you would get to “after the holidays”? It’s time to take action. Looking for your 2012 operational plan? It’s there somewhere. Be sure to file it away when you come across it again. Ah, there it is. That note you made yourself back in June about improving your company’s on-hold message. You can take care of that one right away by requesting a free demo. We’ll take care of the rest.

Let’s make this the best Clean Off Your Desk Day ever!

On Hold Company recently partnered with charitywater.org to fund the drilling of a water well in Cambodia.

“When I first learned how charity:water was providing clean and safe drinking water to people who otherwise would not have it, I knew we had to be a part,” On Hold Company CEO Bryant Wilson said. “We believe the greatest way to make a difference is by providing the core needs of humanity. Food, water, clothing and shelter are essential life elements to everyone, and helping others is just part of who we are at On Hold Company.”

The non-profit organization charity:water brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

Almost 1 billion people don’t have access to clean drinking water, according to charity:water’s website. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.

The charity celebrated its fifth year in existence this year. In that time, donations have funded 4,282 well projects, which serve more than 2 million people in 19 countries.

On Hold Company is proud to join such a worthy cause. Click the banner at the right to learn how you can get involved.

Merry Christmas from On Hold Company

On Hold Company Wishes You a Merry Christmas

On Hold Company wishes all of our clients, friends and associates a Merry Christmas and best wishes for the coming year.

We had a great time recently as we gathered for the On Hold Company Annual Christmas party. We laughed, ate, opened gifts, and reflected on what a great year it has been. It’s always good when you can get away from the office and fellowship like family.

Now the big day is right around the corner. The gifts are wrapped. The tree is trimmed. We hope the hustle and bustle of the season is slowing down for you, and that you are surrounded by family and friends as you focus on the true meaning of Christmas — the birth of Jesus Christ.

It’s a season of hope, joy, and love because our Savior was born in a humble manger that first Christmas night. Our wish for you is that these gifts of the season last throughout the coming new year.

We have much to be thankful for this Christmas season at On Hold Company. We have been blessed this year with wonderful new clients and new members of our team. And we strive to be a blessing to our clients, our community and our world in everything we do. It’s what we are called to do.

We look forward to continuing our “Insanely Great Service” in 2012. In the meantime, join us as we raise our voices with the angels and sing “Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, goodwill toward Men.” (Luke 2:14)
